2425 Alzheimer's: A Personal Journey

My mother, at the age of 74, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's syndrome two years ago. This revelation came as a profound shock to my family, especially since my mother had always been a quick decision-maker and the driving force behind many family decisions. The initial signs were subtle but alarming. She began to forget conversations mere minutes after they happened. One day, she couldn't recall a phone conversation we'd had just moments before. This was the start of a series of unsettling memory lapses.

Despite the initial shock and the aggressive progression of the disease, we sought medical help promptly. My sisters and I escorted her to a specialist, hoping for some clarity and direction. The diagnosis was confirmed, and we were all devastated. My father, in particular, was astonished and deeply depressed by the changes in my mother. The woman who had always been the anchor of our family was now struggling with even the simplest of memories.

Fortunately, we found a ray of hope in modern medicine and therapy. After two years of treatment, my mother’s memory, while still compromised, has shown some improvement. Regular check-ups and the right medication have played a significant role in maintaining her cognitive functions.

One interesting aspect of Alzheimer's that I learned from our doctor is the concept of "working memory." This can be likened to a computer's RAM, where the capacity to store and process information varies from person to person. Typically, younger individuals have a larger working memory, enabling them to memorize and recall information more accurately and quickly. However, with Alzheimer's, this capacity shrinks dramatically, leading to significant memory loss and cognitive decline.

Our doctor explained that the working memory acts like a workspace. For most people, it's like a big table where you can spread out and work on many things at once. But for someone with Alzheimer's, this workspace becomes much smaller, making it harder to manage even simple tasks. This shrinking of memory capacity is why individuals with Alzheimer's often forget small, seemingly unimportant details, while struggling to retain even critical information.

In my blog, I delve deeper into the implications of working memory and Alzheimer's. By understanding the limitations and adapting our expectations and interactions, we can better support our loved ones through this challenging journey. It's crucial to minimize unnecessary information and focus on what truly matters, helping them to utilize their reduced memory space more efficiently.

Dr. Mr., a renowned expert in the field, has also written extensively about this in his book. He emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment that maximizes the use of the remaining working memory, enabling individuals with Alzheimer's to maintain their dignity and quality of life as much as possible.

Through this journey, I've learned that while Alzheimer's is a devastating disease, with the right support and understanding, we can make a significant difference in the lives of our loved ones. It's about finding balance, cherishing the moments we have, and adapting to the new normal with compassion and resilience.

2424:The Resilient Flavors of Culture: Why Globalization Won't Fully Transform Our Palates

In today's interconnected world, it's easy to assume that globalization will eventually create a homogenized global culture, with uniform tastes and practices. However, one area where this assumption consistently falls short is in the realm of food. While Japan, like many other countries, has embraced numerous aspects of Western culture, its culinary traditions remain deeply rooted and fiercely preserved. This phenomenon underscores a broader point: the complete globalization of culture is not only unlikely but perhaps undesirable.

Take, for instance, the enduring popularity of onigiri and bento boxes in Japanese convenience stores. Despite the influx of Western fast food options, these traditional foods have not just survived but thrived. They are a testament to the practicality, flavor, and nutritional balance that Japanese cuisine offers. Onigiri, with its simple yet satisfying combination of rice and various fillings, and bento boxes, with their meticulously arranged and balanced meals, remain staples in the Japanese diet. Their continued prominence illustrates that cultural legacy holds strong against the tides of globalization.

This pattern is not unique to Japan. In India, curry reigns supreme, reflecting centuries of culinary tradition. Italy's pasta is celebrated worldwide but remains a deeply Italian experience at its core. These dishes are more than just food; they are cultural symbols that people hold dear. The preservation of such culinary traditions suggests that a truly globalized community, where local flavors and customs are completely diluted, is both improbable and unwanted.

Even in Japan, where Western influences are evident in many aspects of daily life—from fashion to architecture to late-night habits—food remains a bastion of cultural identity. While Western cuisine has made significant inroads, it has not replaced traditional Japanese dishes. This contrast highlights the unique role that food plays in cultural preservation. Unlike other cultural elements, food is intimately tied to personal and communal identity. It provides comfort, evokes memories, and fosters a sense of belonging.

I once speculated that the convenience of onigiri and similar items might lead to their decline, especially with the rise of global fast food chains. However, the opposite has proven true. These traditional foods continue to be popular, underscoring a deeper resistance to cultural homogenization.

In conclusion, while globalization facilitates the exchange of ideas, goods, and practices across borders, it also coexists with a powerful counterforce: the desire to maintain and celebrate cultural uniqueness. Food, in particular, exemplifies this resistance to complete globalization. It serves as a strong reminder that our diverse culinary traditions are integral to our cultural identities, and these identities will always find a way to endure. The resilience of traditional foods like Japan's onigiri and bento boxes is a testament to the enduring strength of cultural heritage in a globalized world.

2423: The Impact of the Status Quo on Our Lives

The status quo, or the current state of affairs, can significantly influence our decisions and our lives. Understanding the impact of the status quo and actively working to challenge it can lead to positive changes and growth. Let’s explore the effects of maintaining the status quo and the benefits of stepping beyond it.

The Comfort of the Status Quo

The phrase "If I don’t know it…" is common in our lives, highlighting how ignorance can sometimes be blissful. Staying within the familiar can be both positive and negative.

Negative Impact: For instance, when faced with criticism or rejection in romance, not knowing certain things can sometimes maintain a sense of calm. There are situations where ignorance might indeed provide a temporary peace of mind.

Positive Impact: On the other hand, being aware of opportunities can lead to career advancement or new relationships. Exposure to diverse experiences and networks can foster innovation and creativity. Typically, we stay in our comfort zone due to the status quo bias, which hinders our ability to make agile decisions and embrace change.

Major Causes of the Status Quo Bias

Several psychological factors contribute to the status quo bias:

  • Choice Paralysis: The fear of making the wrong decision can lead to inaction.

  • Loss Aversion: The tendency to prefer avoiding losses over acquiring equivalent gains.

  • Mere Exposure Effect: A preference for familiar things.

  • Sunk Cost Fallacy: Continuing a behavior due to previously invested resources.

  • Cognitive Dissonance: The discomfort of holding conflicting thoughts or beliefs.

  • Default Bias: The inclination to stick with pre-set options.

Personal Reflection

I used to strongly adhere to the status quo, preferring solitude and pursuing unique interests privately. However, my MBA experience was a turning point, prompting me to engage more aggressively with others and expose myself to new experiences. Despite this, according to the StrengthsFinder report, my "Woo" (Winning Others Over) strength was ranked 31 out of 34, affirming my introverted nature.

Woo in Contrast to Introversion: Having Woo ranked low (31 out of 34) suggests that I am likely more introverted, preferring deep, meaningful interactions over a broad network of acquaintances. This doesn't mean I can't connect with others effectively, but I might find energy in solitude and one-on-one interactions rather than in large social settings. My experience in an MBA program helped me to adapt and push beyond my natural preferences, demonstrating that strengths can be developed and leveraged in different contexts.

By staying calm and isolating information, we can easily fall into the status quo paradigm, limiting our thinking to what we already know.

Embracing Change

Acknowledging my fears of public speaking and doubts about my knowledge, I realize the importance of continuous learning, networking, and staying updated with the latest trends and technologies. Writing this blog reminds me of the need to challenge my status quo and remain open to new ideas and opportunities.
